This week, we are in Roanoke, Virginia at the Virginia Recycling Association Conference on Tuesday May 15 and Wednesday May 16. After successfully breaking ground at the VRA conference last year, Carton Council is hoping to drive expansion of carton recycling access throughout in the state, and we are off to a great start!

The Carolina Recycling Association honored contributions of individuals, municipalities and companies at their well-attended reception and gala during the 22nd Annual CRA Conference and Trade Show in March. BJ Tipton of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a longtime client of RRS, was honored with the Recycler of the Year award.
BJ was the first recycling coordinator of University of North Carolina Charlotte and has brought a comprehensive approach to Carolina’s recycling program. Currently, as the Manager of the Office of Waste Reduction and Management at UNC Chapel Hill, BJ oversees extensive solid waste management programs and has been instrumental in developing office databases which track schedules, contacts and service locations. BJ continues to make waste reduction, recycling and composting work at UNC Chapel Hill.
As a waste management pioneer, BJ has shaped UNC Charlotte and Chapel Hill campuses and will impact forthcoming programs. Congrats BJ, we are so proud of you. You are truly a recycling rockstar!

While it seems to many of us that recycling our waste is an obvious and automatic task, it is easy to forget that as professionals in the
zero-waste industry, the idea does not come to automatically to all. It is easy to overlook, for instance, that governments do not mandate recycling in all states – not every state encourages a bottle bill or deposit, and many states are severely underdeveloped in recycling infrastructure. We still have a lot of work to do before all consumers become more mindful about keeping recyclable waste out of landfills, and RRS has been addressing this issue every day for over 25 years.

Industry trade shows and conferences are fun for lots of reasons – interactive sessions, tours and workshops, networking, and of course the exhibit hall. Walking in to see endless rows of elaborate displays set up with products and colorful images, paired with a top-notch sales team, is arguably the best asset a conference has to offer. Exhibiting gives companies a great opportunity to get in front of an audience and really connect with the audience; not to mention, the swag – the free stuff. Who doesn’t love a free pen, tote bag, beer cozy, coaster, key chain, or any other piece of branded goody that exhibitors have on display? We all love it, even here at RRS – a few of us have been guilty of snatching up more than our fair share of these conference freebies only to end up with an impressive collection of otherwise useless widgets a week later. Our team had a great time in Tennessee at the Tennessee Recycling Coalition’s annual conference even though our exhibit booth did not get delivered until the last day of the conference. But we are a creative bunch and when the shipping world gives you lemons, we are able make lemonade. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to check out our ‘naked’ booth, we enjoyed talking with you. As always, great job TRC – look forward to next year!

It’s the time of year when boxes of chocolate, pink candy hearts, and red roses dominate the stores and shopping malls. While it’s a great reason for friends and family to send love notes reminding us how much we are loved, the RRS and Carton Council team aren’t taking any time off from recycling on Valentine’s Day – in fact, we are celebrating at a conference dedicated to it!
