Congrats University of Michigan – 20 Years of Recycling

Ann Arbor, MI – Resource Recycling Systems would like to extend a huge congratulations to the University of Michigan as it marks their 20th anniversary of recycling.  The University of Michigan began one of the first university recycling programs in 1989 with the collection of white office paper, newspaper and cardboard.  Since that time they have greatly expanded their collections to include all mixed papers, bottles, cans, glass, small electronics, scrap metal, scrap wood, food wastes, and a long list of hard to recycle items.

The University’s Waste Management Services collected over 2,309 tons of paper and 198 tons of mixed containers in fiscal year 2009.  This brings the department’s overall recycling program totals (since 1989) to 41,380 tons of paper and 2,619 tons of mixed containers.

RRS has had the distinct pleasure of working with the University over the years by providing assistance with processing facility contract negotiations, feasibility studies, strategic planning and financial analysis studies.

RRS give kudos and a hats off to the entire Waste Management Services team.  Thank you to John Lawter (Grounds and Waste Management Services Associate Director), Tracy Artley (Recycling Coordinator), Sam Moran (Waste Management Collections Manager), Alison Richardson, and the following Heavy Equipment Operators: Harold Brown, Dale Bucholz, Dennis Witter, Rod Powers, Tom Heller, Bill Sodt, Tin Villarreal and Rod Green.  Your commitment, passion and dedication to the University of Michigan’s recycling program is priceless.
