Happy Labor Day
Ann Arbor, MI – If Memorial Day is the start of summer, then Labor Day serves as the “official” end of summer. It is the symbolic last chance for families to take trips or have barbeques before school starts; the sign that cooler weather is coming and shorts and swimsuits will be stored for next year.
In 1882, Labor Day was celebrated as a “workingmen’s holiday” by the Central Labor Union in New York City. The holiday spread with the growth of the country’s labor organizations and in 1985 Labor Day was celebrated in many of the country’s industrial centers. The day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. The first national celebration featured a parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and spirit corps of the trade and labor organizations”, then a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This format was followed for many years and was enhanced by speeches from prominent businessmen and women. Today, the holiday continues to celebrate our labor force while also signifying the end of summer.
RRS wishes you a happy and safe Labor Day weekend.
