RRS Co-Founder Jim Frey to Lead NERC's Foundations of Sustainable Materials and Recycling Course

Course Overview

RRS Co-Founder and Executive Chair Jim Frey is teaching NERC's Foundations of Sustainable Materials and Recycling course this spring.

The four-session virtual course runs May 27, June 1, 3, and 8 from 1:00 to 3:30 PM ET. RRS built this program from the ground up, translating years of practical expertise into curriculum for professionals entering or deepening their work in sustainable materials management.

What You'll Learn

Jim co-founded RRS in 1986 and brings over 41 years of experience in technical and strategic consulting for sustainable systems. His work centers on green supply chain infrastructure, corporate sustainability initiatives, zero waste strategies, and public-private partnerships. He holds an MBA with High Distinction from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

The course covers seven modules through hands-on exercises, case studies, and real-world examples: the history and evolution of recycling, the relationship between recycling and trash systems, supply chain mechanics, commodity market dynamics, connections to broader mega trends, best practices for recycling and sustainable materials programs, and performance metrics and goals.

Why It Matters

The recycling and sustainable materials industry is growing fast, and the professionals entering this space need practical, grounded training to make an impact. Having an RRS expert like Jim develop and lead this curriculum means participants are learning directly from someone who has spent over four decades solving real problems in the field, not just studying them. RRS built both of NERC's course offerings from scratch because we believe advancing this industry starts with investing in the people doing the work.

Whether you are new to sustainable materials management or looking to strengthen your foundation, this course is an opportunity to learn from one of the field's most experienced practitioners. Jim will also teach a second cohort beginning October 29 for those unable to join this spring.
