University of Bufffalo Composting Program Expands to Student Apartments
As part of the University at Buffalo’s Integrated Zero Waste Plan, RRS recommended expanding organics capture beyond dining operations to include student living spaces. This fall, UB put that plan into action—rolling out composting to campus apartments and making it easy for students to divert food scraps from landfills. The initiative demonstrates how thoughtful planning and collaboration can translate sustainability strategy into daily practice.
“Composting food waste rather than sending it to a landfill for disposal significantly decreases methane emissions and ultimately generates microbe-rich soil as an end product.”
